I am Stevi Huggins, the granddaughter of Jim Huggins who is the ALTOS President, and I want to give credit to James E. Baker, the author of the Little Troll information below. He has showed many interesting things about Orienteering. His booklet, Orienteering for the Young, helped me in so many ways. I used to be clueless about Orienteering, but now am very educated about it.

The U.S. Orienteering Federation has a program for us kids doing String and White courses. It is called the The Little Troll Program and it has four levels. At each level, you do the appropriate level work. When you finish the level, you receive a sticker to place on a Little Troll card! When the card has the required number of stickers, it is sent to the U.S. Orienteering Federation headquarters for a patch and a new card!

The very first level, the Little Troll level is for kids doing String courses. It's the easiest level.

The next level, the Chipmunk level, is for children doing the String O or White course with much help from an adult. In either case, the child should be learning several skills, i.e. being comfortable in the forest, recognizing basic map symbols and colors, recognizing control codes (the two letter or two digit code placed on controls so you can tell if you have reached the right one), and familiarity with event procedures.

The Rabbit level is for youngsters doing the White course with some adult help. A "rabbit" should become familiar with most common map symbols and the basic safety rules, and learn to orient the map using terrain features, navigate along paths with few junctions, and consider route choice.

At the Roadrunner level, the child will be orienteering on a White course unassisted. (An adult can follow for safety). The skills to be worked on are keeping the map oriented throughout the course, making route choices, and orienteering along many paths. Basic safety should be reinforced.

After completing a level, the child can work towards another patch at the same level, or move up to the next level.
