COMMENTS I picked this little beauty up at a pawn shop where I'd noticed it. The pawn shop had priced it at $100. I didn't buy it then, but when I came back a year later and it was still on the same shelf with the same price, I offered the broker $20 and he took it. The machine is in perfect working order. The HX-20 is considered by most to be the first true portable/laptop computer. It was released in 2 colors, cream (most of the world) and silver (primarily Europe). |
The computer
wasn't very practical for normal use as the screen is only 20 characters
by 4 lines and the printer is your basic everyday adding machine
printer. Definitely not designed for heavy duty word processing.
It was however extremely popular as a data logging computer. In
fact, the HX-20 was still selling quite well when Epson discontinued
it's bigger brother the PX-8. There was also another computer that was sort of a bridge between the HX-20 and the PX-8 that was released AFTER the PX-8. It was referred to as either the PX-4 or the HC-40 depending on the keyboard and display configuration. This machine was the start of Epson's serious foray into the world of POS (Point of Sale) computing devices. |
